There is a core DTS track which is just a normal DTS track. What about backwards compatibility with standard DD/DTS?ĭTS-HD MA has been built so that by design it is backwards compatible. Recently however most discs seem to come with either a TrueHD or DTS-HD MA track and no LPCM (some have all three ) There was quite a lot of early bluray material which came with LPCM audio.

If someone sends you an email that might send you a spreadsheet attachment or they might zip it up and send you a zip file which will be considerably smaller in size.

Think of TrueHD / DTS-HD MA as zip files and LPCM as the content. All they achieve over LPCM is save space. Well technically we dont TrueHD and DTS-HD MA are compression methods and are used so we can get more data onto media. When you output a stereo signal over an S/PDIF connection you are sending a two channel PCM signal. This is just uncompressed multi-channel audio. This seems to cause a lot of confusion but is actually quite simple. HD Audio comes in a couple of different flavours, TrueHD (Dolbys HD codec), DTS-HD Master Audio (DTS HD codec) and LPCM (non-compressed multi-channel audio). With the advent of HD all the emphasis seems to be on Hi-Res video but the audio side often gets overlooked.
